- What motivated you launch Dachshund Couture?
My love for dogs started many years ago. What I noticed with my dogs however was that I could just not find the right coat that matches their body shapes. You have to imagine that Dachshunds have a very special body shape and they need a much longer coats than other dogs. My approach has always been that whenever a problem arises, there is a solution that is needed. I finally decided that I will no longer tolerate the weird coat shapes, colours and cheap fabrics but start creating a coat that perfectly matches the Dachs dog shape.
Due to my experience as a fashion designer I made use of my knowledge and created a coat that is high in quality, stylish to fit the outdoors and a shape that makes them feel comfortable and warm, particularly during the cold winter months in Munich Germany.
Once I had the first coat ready for them to wear, people on the street stopped me and asked me where I got this amazing coat and this continued non-stop, so I figured there seems to be a market for it.
Dachshund Couture was therefore naturally born because people needed and wanted it.
- How important is marketing and branding for your business?
Marketing and branding are key in every business. You have to listen to people who approach you with their needs, and not do whatever you like. This is what I learnt early on.
Our brand is a high-level fashion brand, the lettering is hand-made and the logo of the Dachshund Couture is incorporating some unique calligraphy.
We made sure that our value for high level fashion, top quality and perfect shape is showing up in our brand. For example, the “D” for dachshund is actually representing the ear of the dog in our logo.
Nowadays, you have to be on social media and invest in marketing, advertising and being visible and getting your business seen and noticed. Online marketing and advertising are what we focus on and it is easy to target our customers and clients worldwide.
We just got a request in from New York, which I am super excited for.
- Please tell us a bit more about the quality and your production?
All of our fabrics are from Italy and England. We have for example jumpers made from Alpaka and Cashmere. We outsource our production to Bosnia and ship worldwide. We mostly have European customers but dog lovers from Australia, Tokyo, Mexico and Brazil are seeing our high level in quality and style and are placing orders now too.
So, we are “made in Europe” and we ship worldwide.
- We noticed that you pay attention to the quality, but what else makes you stand out?
We are a high-level fashion brand; we love dogs and people approach us because of our high quality and unique brand. One thing we for example do is that when we ship out the Dachshund coat, we wrap it in a beautiful box and we add a hand-written note to the box. Not only do we write a note but we get to know the name of the dog who will be wearing the designer coat. So, for example, the order we recently got in from New York, I was super excited about. The dog owner sent us a picture of her dog and told us her name is Lola. We love Lola, and now Lola gets a beautiful coat with a letter that is addressed just to her.
Our clients love it that we pay attention to their needs and details and present our coats in style. This is who we are.
- Julia, tell us about your set of core values and business skills that have helped you in your entrepreneurial journey?
My top two values are 1) creativity and 2) identification.
Creativity is needed for trouble-shooting. Sometimes, the production line is not working well, is too costly or other trouble arises. My approach has always been to not take “NO” for an answer. Whenever problems arise, I stay first of all calm. I do not panic but stay calm. I look at the problem and I find a solution. It is simple but a challenge for many. This attitude and ability to be creative enough to solve a problem is why Dachshund Couture was launched; my creativity has helped me adapt, change and find solutions in my businesses and I LOVE being creative.
You also have to identify yourself with the customer. Listen to them and try to cater to them. Do not take things personal when trouble arises.
- What does success mean to you?
Success to me means to be where you want to be!
It means feeling good about what you do and to not lose your passion. The feedback I get is very rewarding and my clients are happy and send me photos of their Dachshund with the new coats and that makes me happy.
- What are some of your new ideas with Dachshund Couture going forward and what is in the pipeline?
Dachshund Couture has grown from high end quality coats in various styles to other complementary products that we offer for the conscious Dachshund owner, such as collars, leashes, pullovers etc.
This is exciting and growing. And as dachshund Couture has grown, we have seen many dogs, photos and gotten amazing feedback from our clients from all over the world. Now we are getting requests from other dog lovers too who have other breeds.
I am already on the move to create another brand. Why? Because I see a need. French bulldogs for example often have problems with their back, and easily get back problems as they grow older. It is because of their unique shape and their DNA. We are therefore thinking of creating a new brand for the French bulldog. This is in the pipeline and we look forward to launching “Frenchie Couture” very soon.
- Thank you so much for your time Julia, and we look forward to seeing your next brand evolve and your creative approach taking shape. In the meantime, how can people get in touch with you and find out more about what you offer?
The easiest is via our website and store and via social media as follows:
