Personal Info & Preferences:
Name & Surname: Leonie Walter, Markus Walter
Age: Leonie (47), Markus (49)
1. Give us a brief background of what you do?
Markus: As Germany’s infotainer couple no 1, we have a training business with open seminars for everyone who’s intention is to inspire his or her audience. It is our passion to show people how to speak in front of groups and to engage with the participants. With a toolbox of training techniques, it is much easier for people to remember what they learned and in direct consequence, they will grow their learning and implementation results.
Leonie: Of course, we are doing individual trainings of speaking basics, Train-the-Trainer, or storytelling for companies as well. Additionally: Individual coaching for trainers or speakers who need inspiration for their next speech or on how to overcome special inhibitions.
2. What is it like to be an entrepreneurial couple and do business together?
Leonie: We know each other since 1994 and work together in our own business since 1996. We married in 1998 and we have a daughter, she’ll turn 18 this year. Therefore, we know what we are talking about, seeing each other almost 24/7. For the two of us as a couple, it has always been a great journey of creativity and personal growth and still is.
Markus: People often ask us if there is a special secret to be an entrepreneurial couple for such a long time that we can share. And if there’s one, then it’s the following: In our opinion, it is important to have separate responsibilities in the business and to always accept the decisions the partner did and not to discuss too long about the pros and cons. Furthermore, for us, there has always been a benchmark: That we can still go out as a couple in the evening and are able to talk to each other, not just about the business but also about private things. And still have fun together.
3. What is the key thing you want people to know about you?
Leonie: Our basic open seminar, unfortunately only available in the German Language so far (we’re working on it to present it in English), has the title “Bring Dein Thema auf die Bühne!” (English: “Bring your message on stage”). This literally means: We want our audience to find out what their passion and their life vision is. And then, of course, they should be able to spread the word. So, our mission takes up the PR thread once again. But instead of being a services provider like in the past 20 years, our goal now is to empower and enable others to enter the stages, to be visible for their targeted messages in order to have a much bigger impact.
4. What has the impact of marketing & branding been on your business?
Markus: Our business background is more than 20 years in the public relations business. We offered services for companies in the information technology industry and helped them to get media coverage with printed and online articles and great photos. And of course, we used these image building skills for our own business as well.
Leonie: For every entrepreneur or company, no matter what size, marketing and branding are still extremely important for being recognized by new customers, for being known in your special market and, not to neglect, as a subsequent reaffirmation for everyone who already decided to be a client. It’s pretty clear that without a marketing and branding strategy, you won’t have visibility in your industry.
5. What 3 core advice/ principals will you give entrepreneurs that are wanting to start their own business?
Leonie: Being specialised in the PR and marketing field, we often recognized that lots of start-ups invested a lot of money in the development of their products and then expected a run of potential customers and a phone that never stops ringing. This doesn’t work when you don’t invest in PR, marketing and visibility, for example by public speaking. So, make sure that you save money for this special task or collect fresh money. Without marketing nobody will notice you.
Markus: The second thing you have to consider is to receive lots of testimonials and recommendations. It is much easier to sell your products or services if you can show how successful your cooperation with clients have been so far and which results they have achieved through your products, coaching and service.
Third advice: “Always be the best version of yourself.” To reach this goal, you have to invest in your self-development which also means: Never stop learning.
6. What is the top challenge you have been faced with as an entrepreneur?
Leonie: The hardest challenge for us always was to delegate the right tasks to the right people. And finding the “right people”. No kidding. It seems to be one of our strongest beliefs that we have to do it on our own.
Markus: Without leading a team and delegating tasks there is no growth. As an entrepreneur, you have to work on your business, not in your business. Still, for us there are some challenges in this area, but we are willing to learn and improve!
7. How do you stay motivated and what keeps you going?
The most important thing in life is: Love what you do! Which means: Have fun while working and don’t differentiate life and work. This is one of our most driving aspects. It keeps us motivated to see our clients grow, to see the great results participants achieve in public speaking or training others.
8. What is your key to success?
Leonie: Since we started our own PR business in 1996, we were always reinventing ourselves on a regularly basis. Innovation is the most driving factor for our success. People often tell us how they admire our spirit of innovation and creativity.
Markus: For us it always has been important to have unique selling propositions and clear business advantages to attract customers and inspire existing clients in an authentic way. Finding unique ways to deliver information or services therefore has always been one of our greatest strengths.
